Internet speed test
The Internet Speed Test is a free online tool that measures your current internet connection's download speed, upload speed, ping (latency) and jitter. Knowing your actual connection speeds helps you troubleshoot slow browsing, diagnose streaming or gaming issues, verify that your ISP is delivering the speeds you are paying for, and determine whether you need a plan upgrade.
The test works by sending data to and from a nearby test server and measuring how quickly it transfers. The entire test takes about 30–60 seconds and requires no download or installation.
What the Results Mean
- Download Speed (Mbps) — how fast data arrives from the internet to your device. Affects streaming, browsing and downloads
- Upload Speed (Mbps) — how fast data goes from your device to the internet. Affects video calls, file uploads and live streaming
- Ping (ms) — response time to the server. Lower is better for gaming and real-time applications
- Jitter (ms) — variation in ping. High jitter causes choppy video calls
Speed Requirements Guide
- HD streaming: 5+ Mbps download
- 4K streaming: 25+ Mbps download
- Video calls: 3+ Mbps up and down
- Online gaming: <50ms ping, 3+ Mbps
Run the test multiple times at different times of day for the most accurate picture. Free, no installation needed.
