About Word Counter

The Word Counter is a free online tool that instantly counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs and provides an estimated reading time for any block of text. Whether you are writing a blog post within a word count limit, checking character counts for meta descriptions, or estimating reading time for UX purposes, this tool gives you all the data you need.

Unlike the word count feature in Word or Google Docs, this tool is accessible from any device in a browser — no software required — and provides more detailed statistics about your text.

How to Count Words

  • Paste or type your text into the input area
  • Word count, character count, sentence count and paragraph count update in real time as you type
  • Reading time is calculated at 200–250 words per minute (average adult reading speed)

What You Get

  • Word count — total number of words
  • Character count — with and without spaces
  • Sentence count — based on punctuation markers
  • Paragraph count — based on line breaks
  • Reading time — minutes and seconds at average reading speed

Useful for blog post planning, Twitter/X character limits, SEO meta description length, academic word limits and more. Free, instant, no login needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are words counted?
Words are split by whitespace — spaces, tabs, and line breaks. Consecutive spaces are treated as one separator. Hyphenated words like "well-known" count as one word. Numbers and contractions are each counted as one word.
What is the Flesch-Kincaid readability score?
Flesch Reading Ease scores text from 0–100. Higher is easier to read. 70–80 is plain English (easy for most readers). 60–70 is standard. Below 30 is very technical. Scores are calculated from average sentence length and average syllables per word.
What do the target presets do?
Target presets set a word count goal and show a progress bar. Meta Description targets 155 characters, Tweet 280, SMS 160, Blog Post 1,500 words. The bar turns green when you hit your target. These are guidelines — not enforced limits.
Is my text saved or sent to a server?
No. All analysis — word counting, readability scoring, keyword density — runs entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Nothing is uploaded or stored. You can use this tool offline once the page has loaded.
How is reading time calculated?
Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute, which is the average adult silent reading speed for general content. Speaking time uses 125 words per minute, the average comfortable speaking pace for presentations and narration.
Why are some keywords not shown?
The keyword density table filters out common stop words (the, is, at, which, etc.) and words shorter than 3 characters, as these do not carry meaningful content. The top 10 remaining keywords are ranked by frequency and shown with their percentage density.
